'Harold Bishop' exits Ramsay Street

Loveable character Harold Bishop is to leave the Australian TV soap Neighbours after 16 years.

Actor Ian Smith who plays the character will film his final scenes on Ramsay Street in October.

In the show, Harold will be seen to overcome prostate cancer before deciding to leave Erinsborough for good.

His final episodes will air in Australia in February. A spokesman for Australia's Ten network said: "It was entirely his decision. We love him and would have loved to keep him."

Harold arrived in Ramsay Street in 1987 when Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue where still in the cast.

He married Madge Ramsay, played by Anne Charleston, but left the show for five years after his character was swept to sea believed dead. He returned in 1996, suffering from amnesia.
